Da Beeg Bad Beeg Island

Ah. Back home in Honolulu.

If you weren't aware, Jacob and I visited the Big Island of Hawaii this past weekend trying to decide if we should relocate. J's current employer has a facility there and he was offered a job. J worked the whole week in Hilo, looking at different apartments in the evenings and exploring the town and surrounding areas. I was only there until Tuesday when I had to come back to Honolulu to work.

Before we went, we got a lot of advice:

DON'T camp in state parks, people dissapear!
DON'T hike unmarked areas in the jungle, you will get shot!
It ALWAYS rains in Hilo. In Pahoa. Every day.

We were a little concerned, but, the Big Island is a great place to grow things, and possibly buy property. And have a dog. Let's not forget that I still love and miss my sweet Cowry dog.

Fortunately, we have some friends that moved to the Big Island recently, so we stayed with them for a few days. They live a little past Pahoa town, so Jacob was able to see what the commute would be like, should we live somewhere he would have to commute. They have a killer deal, a really spacious two bedroom house they rent in the middle of the jungle. We fell asleep to coqui frogs (I like them) and rain. Woke to rain, drove in the rain, walked Gretchens dog in the rain. It rained a lot where they live. Jacob + allthetimerain = SAD.

Hilo town is not so rainy, but it still rains every day. I really like Hilo, it's small and easy to navigate. The massage community though, is not quite as diverse as Honolulu. I'm a little worried about massage work there honestly. I think that it would take a long time to develop a consistent clientel, and then I have to admit, I'm getting a little burned out massage-wise. I'm pretty well set up with my jobs right now, but thinking about all the effort it would take to build up something new is not an enticing prospect. So, maybe a different job.

In short, I don't know about Hilo. The rent isn't that much cheaper than what we have (although we'd have more space). If we live in town, we're just trading cities, if we live out of town, we're adding a commute to the day. The job for J is not all that different, and the job for me would be much more difficult at least for a while. And it is nice to be back in sunny Honolulu.

Anna! I am excited to see what you decide to do. I hope you stay close to me, but support you in whatever is best. We are heading to Kona Thurday. Any recommendations? We mostly will stick close to the temple, but also want to see lava, black and green sand beaches, and do some hiking. What do you think? P.S. I miss you. Can you come to the country soon??

There's a lot to be said for sunshine. Good luck making this decision.

P.S. Lots of sun in Utah!
